When you want to see the future, just look at the past, the past says Waze’s cofounder

Waze has become the go-to for drivers in the age of Google Maps and Apple Maps.
Now the startup is trying to change the way people see the world by making it easier to visualize how far away a destination is.
The new app uses a combination of real-time GPS and the company’s own virtual mapping system, Waze Maps, to help drivers navigate through urban and rural areas.
Waze says it is now a “digital version of a virtual city,” and it uses the new Waze app to show how far off a given location is from its closest neighbor, and how far apart from the same location there are.
“The world is a big place, and when you have a big map, it’s hard to visualize the things that are around you,” Waze CEO and cofounder Mark Gurman told a crowd in New York City.
Washys current app shows where drivers are on the map, but does not show where they are in real life.
It’s based on Google Maps, which allows drivers to get directions from their smartphones and the app is available on Google Play.
Waze says its software now shows real-world directions for almost every location.
Gurman says the new app will work with smartphones and tablets.
And it’s also compatible with smartwatches and other devices.
